Location: Buffalo, NY
Reports to: CWA District One Legislative and Political Director and Upstate NY and New England Area Director
The Communications Workers of America, District One is seeking an experienced researcher to provide research and strategic guidance on healthcare employers and to advise on healthcare public policy issues. This individual should also have a strong background in healthcare reimbursement issues.
Background:
Communications Workers of America, District One is a progressive union representing nearly 150,000 members from New Jersey to Maine, with a commitment to militancy, membership mobilization and building a broad social movement for economic justice. The union represents about 15,000 health care workers in New York State, and is seeking a skilled individual who can do corporate research and financial analysis and provide strategic advice in support of CWA’s organizing, legislative and bargaining campaigns involving our health care sector workers. CWA’s health care workers are primarily located in Western and Central New York.
Responsibilities:
· Conduct financial & strategic analysis of hospital industry and hospitals.
· Provide strategic research and advice to staff and leaders for organizing and contract campaigns.
· Develop and write analysis, testimony & position papers on industry trends and issues affecting healthcare workforce.
· Provide support for contract & organizing campaigns, including developing plans with local CWA leaders; outreach to local community groups, elected officials and media.
· Provide leadership development and training on skills and issues.
· Provide educational materials to Union membership on health care industry; legislation and regulatory matters.
· Participate in policy staff meetings and strategic development.
Requirements:
· 1-2 years in financial and corporate research for Unions or other public interest organizations.
· Strong research and analytical skills.
· Computer and data analysis; ability to use software for financial and data analysis.
· Ability to compile, analyze and present data on healthcare industry, Medicare and hospital cost reports and on specific finances for members and staff.
· Strong writing and public presentation skills.
· Background in labor or community organizing and coalition building experience strongly desirable.
· Understanding of Union organizing and contract negotiations.
· Able to work in a team and with Union members and staff.
Salary: Salary range from $55,000 up, commensurate with experience. Includes medical and dental benefits.
