Good Old Lower East Side (GOLES) Seeks Community Organizer (Disaster Recovery & Resilience) (NYC)

Good Old Lower East Side (GOLES) is a community-based, membership organization that has been dedicated to keeping people in their homes and community since 1977. GOLES works to build the power of low- income residents through social justice organizing campaigns, community education, coalition-building, individual counseling, and community driven research.

GOLES seeks a bright, self-driven, and experienced organizer to join our organizing team. The position entails organizing and building the leadership of local residents around disaster recovery and community resilience in the Lower East Side in the context of global climate change.

Specific responsibilities and duties:

  • Identify residents with unmet recovery and housing needs and connect to counseling, case management, or referral services
  • Develop and implement outreach strategies to identify at-risk households and buildings
  • Provide technical assistance to tenant associations and residents around developing response and recovery techniques, and action plans for individuals and building- wide
  • Organize residents to develop and implement resiliency, recovery and housing campaigns
  • Train residents to develop their leadership and political education
  • Coordinate community and building-wide education meetings, trainings, and events
  • Liaise with landlords, co-op shareholders, and building leadership to facilitate recovery, retrofits and eliminate weaknesses for future disasters
  • Facilitate community engagement sessions to familiarize residents with local resources
  • Work on special projects and campaigns as needed
  • Maintain member and local residents’ records in GOLES’ database
  • Ensure activities meet respective deliverables and work on reporting

Qualifications:

Commitment to social, economic, and racial justice. Bachelor’s Degree preferred. Three or more years of experience in community organizing with low-income communities of color. Experience in disaster recovery, climate change or environmental justice preferred. Strong coordination, facilitation, and campaign planning skills. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, writing and computer skills. Capacity to lead or manage multiple tasks and projects at once. Ability to work: independently and in a team; under pressure and meet deadlines; evenings and weekends. Bilingual in Spanish or Mandarin/Cantonese strongly preferred.
