A conversation about workers, communities and social justice

Partner Institutions

SLU partner institutions host some of the most exciting and vital work our school is connected with. Learn about some of our partner institutions here.

New Labor Forum
New Labor Forum is a national labor journal from the Murphy Institute, at the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies, published by SAGE Press three times a year, in January, May, and September. Founded in 1997, the journal provides a place for labor and its allies to consider vital research, debate strategy, and test new ideas.

Community and Worker Ownership Project (CWOP)
The Community and Worker Ownership Project (CWOP) supports efforts percolating around the nation and New York City focused on worker-owned cooperatives, economic democracy, and community planning. In this age of burgeoning inequality and pervasive challenges to political and workplace democracy, this project supports projects in worker participation and control, as well as grassroots leadership in community development in collaboration with a broad array of organizational stakeholders, including unions, worker centers, community-based organizations, businesses and worker cooperatives.

Workforce Development
SLU’s Murphy Institute for Worker Education is dedicated to expanding higher educational opportunities to union members and adult learners to help them achieve their academic and career goals. It collaborates with other CUNY units across the five boroughs of New York City to offer pre- and post-admission services, including basic skills workshops, counseling, tutoring, and test preparation. In some instances, tuition support may also be available. The Institute’s College Access Program for Working Adults matches personal and career interests of individual students with colleges and programs throughout the CUNY system.

International Program for Labor, Climate and Environment
In 2015, the Murphy Institute founded the International Program for Labor, Climate and Environment (IPLCE), which serves as a global hub linking trade unions, grass roots organizations, social movement leaders and policy-oriented allies to advocate for effective solutions to the climate emergency, and to advance the struggle for energy democracy at all levels.
