Launch Teach-In Organizer for The Next System Project (NYC — part-time)

The Democracy Collaborative is seeking a campus event organizer to provide 20 hours/week of labor assisting the Next System Project, an ambitious new initiative aimed at helping Americans think boldly about what is required to deal with the systemic challenges the United States faces now and in coming decades. Working with a broad group of theorists and activists, and using the best research, understanding and policy thinking, the Next System Project seeks to develop and refine comprehensive alternative political-economic system models and launch a national debate that will put the central idea of system change – and that there can be a “next system” – on the map in a serious way.

The Launch Teach-In Organizer will provide day to day organizing of a multi-day “Launch Teach-In” event in mid- to late February at one or more campuses in New York City, as specified under the terms of a contract for service.

Candidates for the position should possess strong organizing, writing and online media skills and have a demonstrable interest in alternative political economy and a commitment to transformative political, legal, economic, social and ecological change. Experience with campus organizing, including working with faculty, staff, graduate employees, and student groups would be a major advantage. The Democracy Collaborative is committed to equal opportunity—people of color, people with disabilities, women, and LGBTQ candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and execution of day-to-day activities, including securing venues, event logistics, setting up meetings and events, networking and partnership-building;

  • Promoting and publicizing the launch teach-in events in the region;

  • Recruiting participation among student, campus labor, faculty, and community organizations and networks;

  • Maintaining fluid communication with “home office” staff and partners;

  • Representing the Teach-Ins professionally in a variety of public settings;

  • Filing complete reports on progress before, during, and following the launch teach-in.

Length of contract: Contract runs through March 31, 2016, with a possibility of further work in the future depending on performance and available funds.

Start date: Immediate.

To apply: Please email a cover letter, resume and writing sample with “Next System Project Teach-Ins” in the subject line to jobs@democracycollaborative.org immediately. We will contract with the first individual who meets our needs. No phone calls please.
