West Harlem Environmental Action, Inc (a/k/a WE ACT for Environmental Justice) (WE ACT) is a 501 (C)(3) community-based environmental justice organization. Our mission is to build healthy communities by assuring that people of color and/or low-income participate meaningfully in the creation of sound and fair environmental health and protection policies and practices. We are dedicated to building community power to fight environmental racism and improve environmental health, protection and policy in communities of color. To accomplish our mission we engage in community organizing, community-based research, education/training, and community-driven advocacy campaigns to change public policy.
WE ACT seeks an energetic self-starter to fill our Bi-Lingual Spanish Community Organizer position. The successful candidate should be dedicated to raising public awareness of environmental justice issues affecting underserved populations and minorities in New York City. The Community Organizer will work with WE ACT’s organizing team to develop and implement an organizing and outreach plan for our Northern Manhattan Climate Resiliency campaign and our WE ACT for Healthy Homes campaign. A key responsibility would be outreaching to and mobilizing residents in the West, Central, East Harlem, Washington Heights and Inwood neighborhoods to participate in the planning and advancement of both campaigns.
Principal Responsibilities:
Work closely with the Organizing Director to develop strategies for WE ACT’s Environmental Health and Justice campaigns and to build a base of Spanish speaking residents
Coordinate and conduct organizing events (develop outreach materials, supervise phone banks, conduct door to door outreach to residents in Northern Manhattan and plan informational sessions on key issues) Other community organizing responsibilities as necessary
Qualifications
BS degree or an equivalent of two (2) years of organizing experience is required. Knowledge of Northern Manhattan communities
Knowledge of environmental and social justice issues affecting communities of color and low income communities. Ability to work collaboratively. Experience promoting issues and policy objectives Spanish/English necessary
Salary Range
$35,000 to $39,000 annually with paid medical and dental and vision benefits. Pre-tax transit card is available.
