COP21: Dispatch #1

From Murphy Prof. Sean Sweeney, 12/5/15:

I am here at COP 21 in Paris, where the first week of the two-week UN climate change conference has just concluded. Unions are fighting for a reference in the final agreement to “a just transition of the workforce” and are getting support from Argentina, Canada and one or two others.  The US negotiators are not blocking this, but neither are they willing to support it openly. Meanwhile, the JSMI is represented through Trade Unions for Energy Democracy, which has organized a number of workshops on the issue of asserting democratic control over the energy system in order to meet climate targets. Here’s an article in YES! that reports on one of these sessions.

350.org Seeks N. America Iconic Divestment Campaigns Coordinator

USA – preferably in NYC, Oakland, or Washington, DC.

We are looking for a talented campaigner to identify, research and run short-term online-to-offline divestment campaign drives to amp up the media profile and boost the political power of the fossil fuel divestment movement.

About 350.org

350.org is building a global grassroots movement to solve the climate crisis. Our online campaigns, grassroots organizing, and mass public actions are led from the bottom up by thousands of volunteer organizers in over 188 countries. 350.org works hard to organize in a new way—everywhere at once, using online tools to facilitate strategic offline action. We want to be a laboratory for the best ways to strengthen the climate movement and catalyze transformation around the world.

About the NA Divestment Iconic Campaigns Coordinator position:

The North America Iconic Divestment Campaigns Coordinator will work closely with the North America Divestment leadership team to research and run the short-term, media-savvy divestment campaign pushes that keep the Fossil Fuel Divestment campaign in the headlines and in dinner table conversations. Working with our organizing, digital and communications staff, the coordinator will identify targets with the greatest cultural and political value and coordinate online-to-offline campaign drives to divest them.

A candidate will be most successful if they are creative, self-driven, and are able to use short term campaigns to drive toward a larger vision. Each day they will need to balance their own priorities, whether it is digging into research, launching a digital campaign, planning with coalition partners, or coaching on-the-ground organizers to plan powerful actions. While they will have the support of a large team, the coordinator will be responsible for driving these campaigns from start to finish. Strong written and verbal communication skills are a must, and ideally we’d like to find someone with some digital campaigning experience. But in the end, the most important thing is that they have the skills and drive to WIN campaigns in a way that moves us closer to our vision.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of online or offline campaigning experience
  • Proven record of working successfully with coalition partners
  • 3 years of strategic planning or project management experience (ideally for grassroots campaigns)
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills and the ability to write for a variety of audiences and platforms
  • Experience using or comfort learning how to use Facebook, Twitter, ActionKit, Control Shift Labs, and Hangouts on Air to drive campaign engagement
  • Knowledge of and dedication to the fossil fuel divestment movement, the broader climate movement, and/or other movements for climate or social justice
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with team members who are often remote
  • Excellent time management skills and commitment to healthy work-life balance

Desired (but not required) skills and experiences

  • Professional digital campaigning experience
  • Ability to train others on online campaigning tools and offline campaigning skills
  • Creativity and comfort with experimenting with new tools and tactics

We are looking for someone who is comfortable working both independently and in teams, highly responsive, and able to lead initiatives as well as take direction from others.

Position Type: Full Time

Application Deadline: Although we hope to begin interviews during the week of December 7, this job is open until filled, or the hiring manager determines that they can no longer accept applications.

A cover letter is not required for this position. We are far more interested in your answers to the specific questions below.

Start Date: January 15 (flexible)

Compensation: competitive compensation based on experience

Location: We can employ in CA, GA, MD, MA, MT, NY, NC, PA, VT, VA, WA, DC, but prefer to host in hub offices in NYC, Oakland, and Washington, DC

Our team strives to be an inclusive and collaborative group that engages a broad range of strategies for social change. We value new perspectives, innovative ideas and different ways of working. Diverse perspectives and experience enhance the way 350.org selects and approaches its areas of work, as well as the creativity and effectiveness of our campaigns. 350.org prioritizes making leadership positions available to women, people of color, indigenous people and communities most impacted by climate change and environmental prejudices.
