Murphy Institute Seeks Mental Health Counseling NTA

The CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies seeks applicants for a part-time mental health counseling position for Fall Semester 2018. The School of Labor and Urban Studies (formerly The Murphy Institute) is a collaboration between the University and New York City labor unions, for the purpose of serving the educational, policy and research needs of unions and their members. The mission of the Center for Worker Education is to; 1) offer undergraduate and graduate programs to working adult students and union members; 2) expand access to colleges throughout the CUNY system; and 3) partner with labor unions and employers to address training and educational needs of union members. The Center for Labor, Community, and Policy Studies conducts research, offers leadership development programs, hosts forums and national conferences, publishes articles, books and a nation labor journal to promote debate on issues critical to labor’s future and its policy role.

The mental health counselor will provide counseling support to graduate, undergraduate and certificate program students (many of whom are returning to school after an extended time away) as well as provide training and support for our advisement staff around mental health.

General Duties:

  • Provide short-term individual counseling (establishing and developing a relationship with students in need)
  • Provide crisis intervention for emergency situations
  • Liaise and consult with SLU staff and faculty around student cases; plan actions steps (academically as well as emotionally/psychologically), and work on building a support system for students
  • Give referrals to students if long term care is needed
  • Offer group counseling/support groups in areas of stress management, effective communication, sleep and healthy relationships
  • Develop crisis intervention & action plan training for staff responding to a crisis
  • Give staff training on identifying & supporting students in distress
  • Deliver and help promote workshops on violence and sexual harassment prevention, LGBTQ awareness, diversity awareness, internship program students’ adjustment to NYC, and international student adjustment to the US

Required qualifications:

  • An MSW or Master’s degree in counseling and a New York State license as a mental health practitioner (psychology, social work, or mental health counseling).
  • Three or more years of experience in the field
  • The preferred candidate will have experience counseling in a college setting (particularly with adults returning to school).

Consultants are paid on the CUNY “Non-Teaching Adjunct I” scale, currently $42.95/hr for new hires, and must abide by CUNY workload limits.
